Call for Papers from the President-elect
(Deadline for Submissions: April 1, 2006)

Dear Colleagues, Friends, and Members of the ACPA:

This letter is our invitation to participate in the Association’s 2006 Annual Meeting, to be held October 27-29, 2006, in Granville, Ohio, also the home of Denison University.  Granville is twenty-five miles east of the Columbus airport and nestled in the Welsh Hills of central Ohio.  A restored village whose historical enterprise has always been education, the downtown area is on the National Registry of Historical Buildings.  A walkable and friendly village with some of the best examples of Greek revival architecture in the United States, Granville is known as one of the most charming villages in the mid-west.  We will be using two of the Inns in the village with housing also available at several “Bed and Breakfasts” within a short walking distance of the Inns.

Enough with tourist information – now to the main business of our gathering in Granville.  The conference theme will be “Intelligence and the Philosophy of Mind.”  Our plenary speakers will be John Haldane (University of St. Andrews), Anthony Kenny (University of Oxford), and Kurt Pritzl (The Catholic University of America).  Each of these philosophers has been involved centrally with issues in the philosophy of mind and connections with figures central to classical Western philosophy.  We are delighted that all three have accepted our invitation for 2006.  As part of this meeting, we are also planning a roundtable discussion of the role that philosophers can play in college and university administration.  Invitations will be extended to several philosophers now serving in major administrative positions.

Everyone is cordially invited to send in a submission for this conference.  The program committee is especially interested in receiving papers that address issues in the philosophy of mind, broadly construed.  Nonetheless, as has been the regular practice of the ACPA, papers in any area of philosophy are most welcome.  Topics in line with the conference theme might include: direct realism; our knowledge of the external world; abstraction theories, both medieval and modern; the philosophy of mind and classical Aristotelian theories; Aquinas and functionalism; the relation of inner sense to concept formation; the role of the phantasm in human knowing; Gilson, Maritain, Rahner, Lonergan, and/or other twentieth century Thomists on issues in the philosophy of mind; the nature of the inner word; folk psychology and its critics; the relation of language to thought; the theory of innate ideas; the nature and prospects of “analytical Thomism”; the relation between the philosophy of mind and cognitive science.  These are just some topics that would fall squarely under the conference theme; and once again, papers that fall outside the scope of the conference theme are most welcome as well.

All submissions should be sent (in quadruplicate, accompanied by two copies of an abstract) to the following address:
